INTRODUCTION
This INSET plan is divided into four
sessions.
The first session is on "Storytelling and
Songs" and it is done by Febronia Volatile.
The second session is on "Arts and Crafts"
and it is done by Claudia Valentini.
The third session is on "Food" and
it is done by Annamaria Caltabiano.
The last is on "Games" and it is
done by Gabriella Vita.
These four sessions are intended to
be a section of a course for trainee teachers in the Italian Primary
School who have just started their career as teachers of EFL. The group
is composed of twelve teachers, with mixed knowledge/ability/experience.
They are the first part of a 150-hour course and focus on the "Cultural
Aspects", using "Festivals" as a starting point.
Working on "Festivals" gives
the teachers the chance to use enjoyable activities that help motivate
children and therefore develop a positive attitude towards the target
language. Besides, "Festivals" are a means of linking fantasy
and imagination with the real world and creating connections between
their own culture and a different one, as the Italian Ministerial Programs
recommend.
They also provide hints for cross-curricular themes, taking into account
the different learning strategies and styles.
Through the training sessions teachers are guided to participate actively,
to develop the attitude to share ideas and experiences, to raise awareness
and creative powers within the language development.
The course begins with a warm-up activity jointly led by the four tutors.
The final feedback is to organise a party.
